Ube or that color purple dessert or boba flavor drink we have been seeing
in instagram, snapchat, twitter, Pinterest, or other social media platform
feeds has been gaining its popularity in the food industry. But
WHAT IS UBE?
Ube is a purple yam originally from the Philippines. It’s
essentially a bright purple sweet potato with an even sweeter, more
mellow taste than its orange relative with a slightly nutty, vanilla
taste. It’s popularly used in desserts in Filipino cuisine, often boiled
and then mashed with condensed milk. Ube is often confused with Taro,
another similar root vegetable, but the two are distinct. Taro is often
used in savory dishes, while ube, while it can be cooked with savory
spices, is more commonly used in sweets.
