Mate is probably the most consumed infusion in
Argentina. It basically consists in soaking dried Yerba Mate leaves in hot
water, served in a "Mate" and drank through a special metal straw. It's
also consumed in other countries, such as Paraguay and Uruguay. And no,
it doesn't contain any type of drug๐.
Basic elements of Mate
๐ง Mate: the recipient in which the infusion is drunk
from. It can be made of wood, plastic, ceramics or a special dried
pumpkin.
๐ง Yerba: it's the dried leaves. There are different
brands to choose from and you can also mix it with other scented
herbs, such as peppermint.
๐ง Bombilla: this is how the "special straw" is
called. One basic tip: you NEVER try to stir the yerba with
the bombilla (unless you want to be yelled at by some angry
argentinian๐)
