Joan Didion is one of America's great female authors. She began her career
writing for Vogue after winning a writing competition in the 1960s.
Throughout the 1970s she continued to write personal essays as well as
pieces that reflected the political and social tone of the time. Although
her portfolio is largely non-fiction, she has also written novels,
including Play It As It Lays (1970) and Book of Common Prayer (1977).
