Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons or modern-day
slavery, is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to
provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. The
coercion can be subtle or overt, physical or psychological. Exploitation
of a minor for commercial sex is human trafficking, regardless of
whether any form of force, fraud, or coercion was used. There is no
single profile of a trafficking victim. Victims of human trafficking can
be anyone—regardless of race, color, national origin, disability,
religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity,
socioeconomic status, education level, or citizenship status.
Labor Trafficking
The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) defines
labor trafficking as: “The recruitment, harboring,
transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or
services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose
of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or
slavery.” The TVPA also recognizes sex trafficking, which is discussed
in a separate fact sheet. A modern-day form of slavery, labor
trafficking is a fundamental violation of human rights.
Organ Trafficking Organ Trafficking is one of the lesser known forms of
trafficking mostly because there is a lack of reliable information
about it. In the U.S. there has been only one man convicted of this
crime back in 2012. "Despite the general interest in the issue, the
crime remains a hidden, underground activity and seems to be greatly
underreported," says the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Sex Trafficking Sex trafficking is defined by the Trafficking Victims
Protection Act of 2000external icon as “the recruitment, harboring,
transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a
person for the purpose of a commercial sex act.” It involves the use
of force, fraud, or coercion to make an adult engage in commercial sex
acts. However, any commercial sexual activity with a minor, even
without force, fraud, or coercion, is considered trafficking.
