Invasive Alien Species

Acacia longifolia

The dissemination of invasive alien species (IAS) has increased in the last 100 years. IAS are animals and plants that are introduced accidentally or deliberately into a natural environment
where they are not normally found, with serious negative consequences for their new environment. Invasion by alien plant species threatens ecossystem integrity, the existence of endemic species and can have human and economic impacts, as well.

The genus Acacia is amongst the most aggressive invaders worldwide. In Portugal, the species Acacia longifolia is one of the most prolific plant invaders. Since its introduction, in the late 19th century, the species has colonized agroflorestal and dune ecosystems, disrupting their functioning and altering the balance of native flora communities. The species has several key functional traits that ensure its success. Controlling Acacia longifolia is a complex and costly process. The control methodologies used include physical, physical+chemical and biological control.
