Since ancient times, nomads believed in the healing power of koumiss. It was used to treat various diseases, to strengthen weakened immune system, and even to rejuvenate. The name of the drink comes from the Turkic word qimiz. It is a fermented milk liquid obtained from mare's milk as a result of fermentation using yeast, acidophilus and Bulgarian lactic acid bacteria.
