container gardening

ideal for those with little to no garden space

If you're low on space or live in an apartment, container gardening may be the perfect way for you to have access to fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables.

There are many factors that come into play when planning your container garden. How much space for containers you have, the types of plants that do well in containers, and the size of the containers you will need. However, don't let the planning scare you away! Growing your own food is a rewarding experience that everyone should be allowed to enjoy.

When planning your container garden, consider the plants you'd like to grow. Some plants that do well in containers are: eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, green onions, peppers, etc. You must also take into consideration the size and shape of a plant's root system in order to determine the proper size container. The color of your container is another factor to consider as lighter colored pots keep the soil cooler than their darker counterparts.

No matter what you choose to grow in, drainage holes are a must. Without proper drainage, plants can become waterlogged and die. You can drill your own holes if a container does not have them. It's also recommended to put rocks or pieces of old terracota pots in the bottom to aid drainage.

Container gardening takes a bit of planning like any garden project. If the idea of growing your own food in a smaller space appeals to you, consider heading to your local garden store to begin the process. You can also sign up for our bi-weekly newsletter down below!
