Japan is often called "the land of the rising sun", but why is
Japan known by this? This expression is actually a translation of the
name the Japanese use to to refer to their country, namely
Nihon (Nippon) . Both Nihon and Japan
originate from the same words, which literally mean
"where the sun rises".
The history of this expression is rather unique as Japan was not always
called Nihon. Before the 7th century Japan was called
"Wa" or "Yamato"
using the Chinese character. However, in the early 8th century the
Japanese gouvernment decided to change the countries name from Wa
(Yamato) to Nihon (Nippon). The unique aspect of this is that when
naming the country, the government took the Chinese government into
considoration. This was possible a way to show its respect for the
Chinese, as Japan is located where the sun rises for the Chinese and not
for the Japanese.
