The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place primarily upon a continent called Westeros, but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. There are three principal storylines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros between several competing families; the rising threat of the Others who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the journey of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years previously and now seeks to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, all three storylines become increasingly interwoven and dependent on each other.
The first book in this epic series begins with the hobbit Frodo Baggins as he flees from his home in the Shire to escape the minions of the Dark Lord Sauron. Sauron seeks the One Ring that will allow him to control the Bearers of the nineteen other Rings and control the three major races of Middle-Earth: Elves, Men, and Dwarves. The One Ring has been inherited by Frodo who finds himself unwittingly in the midst of a struggle for world domination.
The Realm of the Elderlings is a fantasy universe created by Robin Hobb. The universe consists of several smaller series (mostly trilogies), including the Farseer trilogy and the Liveship Traders trilogy. The books follow the life and escapades of FitzChivalry Farseer, who is a trained Royal Assassin of the Farseer lineage.
