Water, water, everywhere...

We rely on this critical substance for every aspect of our lives

But what exactly is water?

Who else is using it?

And what can we do to protect it?

So, what is water?

According to Wikipedia, water is an inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless chemical substance.

Water is vital for all known forms of life, even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. It is the main constituent of Earth's hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms.

Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, connected by covalent bonds.

Our marine neighbours

We aren't the only ones on the planet who rely on water.

There are over 200,000 marine species that we know about, and maybe another two million that we have yet to document. These range from microscopic organisms like phytoplankton, all the way up to the blue whale.

Aside from being cute or interesting, every single one of these species plays an important part in the ecosystem. As the most intelligent animal on the planet (and one of the few with opposable thumbs!) we humans have a duty to look after our friends in the natural world.

Unfortunately, we aren't doing a great job of it.

  • Did you know?

  • More than one billion people depend on fish as their main source of protein.
However, only 20% of worldwide fish stocks are being used responsibly. The majority of fish stocks are being overexploited and are on their way to depletion.
  • 93% of the Earth's heat is absorbed by the oceans.
Climate change can affect an animal's reproductive success and destroy its breeding and hunting grounds.
  • 700,000 plastic water bottles are littered every day in the UK alone.
Over time, these plastics degrade into toxic microplastics, which float around the ocean and are ingested by seals, fish, and other marine animals.
