Sound Healing with Tibetan Singing Bowls

I am about to share with you a true passion of mine: sound healing with singing bowls!

Where my sound healing journey began!

I found a mediation class a few years ago and attended not sure what to expect. I was welcomed by a sound healer whose warm welcome made me feel like I had known her for years. She led me through my first group session of what I call "the bowls" and what a wonderful experience that was!

The group was let through a guided meditation leading bissfully into a beautiful array of bowls that were gently struck throughout a 45 minute session. The longer the bowls were played, the more I completely relaxed, slipping into a deep meditative state. I "awoke" from a dream-like state feeling floaty and more relaxed than I ever had before.

It was at that point I knew I was hooked! I wanted to share that experience with others and started sharing the group sessions with close friends; I soon realised that this was something I wanted to learn myself, so that I could not only play my own bowls, but hold a relaxation space for others.

And so I learnt how to play the Tibetan singing bowls via the very same healer that gave me my first experience! In 2020 I qualified as a Level 2 Sounder Healer and am pleased to say that I am accredited by IPHM. Once we are able to hold classes again, I look forward to holding relaxation sessions locally for others to enjoy!

What is Sound Healing?

There is a much longer and more scientific answer that I can give you, however I will try to simplify this to keep it short. Sound healing is the practice of using the frequencies and vibrations of sound to promote relaxation. A sound in essence is a vibration; we can feel vibrations and therefore it makes sense that these vibrations have an impact on our body.

The way the vibrations interact with our body at certain frequencies, can create a trance-like or medative state. Have you ever heard a piece of music that brings joy? Or one that makes you relax? Sound works on us beings in a very magical way!

There are many types of way you can perform sound healing, but the singing bowls have a unique sound unlike gongs or tuning forks, that are often used by some sound healers. Take a look at this video to show you how sound works on matter.

What are Tibetan Singing Bowls?

There are some pictures above and below that show you two beautiful examples of the Tibetan style singing bowls. "Tibetan" here refers to the style of bowl in particular, as there are various types that denote shape and style. The bowls pictured are made in Nepal by family that have been making them for hundreds of years and the quality of sound is wonderful (I may be a little biased as have a full set of my own)!

They are hand made and sometimes have a machine finished elements too - the bowl at the top this page details machine finished rim that allows the sound healer to play the bowl in different way to omit a different sound as opposed to striking the bowl with a soft mallet at it's edge. A hand made bowl is pictured directly below *
