Honeybees

How to help your local pollinators

Honey Bee by Sabine Debert

The best known honey bee is the western honey bee (Apis mellifera), which has been domesticated for honey production and crop pollination. They are social insects which are living on nectar and pollen.

Especially honeybees are under threat worldwide because of virulent viruses against which they have no natural defences. Nearly all colonies in the wild have died out and without beekeepers to care for them, honeybees could disappear in a few years. Without bees, pollination would be difficult and time consuming - it is estimated that one-third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination.
