BEYOND THE SUMMIT

An Outdoor Adventure Guide

In case you haven’t heard the news yet, Kananaskis Provincial Park is the new Banff National Park. It’s home to some of the most jaw-dropping hikes, lakes and views in the world and it is the must-see destination in the Canadian Rockies.

Quite honestly, it’s the jewel in Alberta’s crown. It’s just as stunning as Banff, but because it’s a little more remote and undeveloped, it has a fraction of the crowds. Adventures into Kananaskis are like a breath of fresh air; a complete escape into what the Canadian wilderness should actually feel like.

Hiking

Hiking is one of the main activities in the Canadian Rockies that can be enjoyed by everyone. You will find anything between easy, shorter hikes to long day hikes around Canmore and Kananaskis Country. The main thing to know about Kananaskis is that many of the trails are very hard to find (or follow), so good preparation beforehand is paramount. Any information you can prepare beforehand will serve you extremely well. That means, download maps or trails before leaving home. There is virtually no cell service in Kananaskis, so downloading more information on the fly isn’t going to work. Visit AllTrails to ensure you're prepared!

Camping

Kananaskis Country offers a variety of campgrounds, camping and RV facilities. From rudimentary backcountry camping to full service RV hookups, the area holds some of the most scenic camping in Canada. Campgrounds in Kananaskis Country feel much more remote and are quieter than those in the more well-known areas. Kananaskis Country is nature at its best and as a result, it is a great place to spot wildlife. Some of the animals you'll likely come across include mountain goats, marmots, deer, moose, and, if you are lucky enough, grizzly bears - something to consider when you are setting up your campsite. Mountain Biking

Two wheels are the perfect way to explore, whether you want to take the family for a lakeside spin, tackle gruelling road climbs, or enjoy the thrill of a tree-lined downhill trail. From gentle passages through sun dappled forest to rocky drops and sweet single track, there are many options, both on-road and off-road, for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Whatever the season, weather in the mountains is unpredictable so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit, tools, and warm waterproof layers. Head over to Trailforks to plan your route!
