Were it not for Abraham Lincoln, it seems unlikely Springfield would be a capital at all. When Illinois became a state, the capital was Kaskaskia. It was later moved to Vandalia, and then it was Lincoln'spolitical maneuvering on behalf of Springfield that decided the capital's final location.
