Quidditch is the only full contact, mixed gender sport in the world. A
rugby and dodgeball hybrid, the sport began over 10 years ago and has
grown to thousands of players in over 30 countries. Quidditch is
unique in that women play on an equal playing field to men. The
International Quidditch Association rule book requires a minimum
number of females on pitch ensuring presense, participation and
determination. Quidditch is promoted as a 'sport for the 21st century'
for its progressive attitudes, its inclusive policies and continuing
to adapt to the changing needs of its millenial audience.
Why is Quidditch Special for Women?
Progressive
Quidditch is a non-gendered sport and accepts all identities,
resulting in a high LGBT+ player base. As a result, the community are
very passionate, progressive and friendly
Complex Due to Quidditch being highly
tactical, it compliments women's powerful sporting abilities in
strategy and teamwork i.e larger, brawnier physique associated with
male athletes does not give a strong sporting advantage
Supportive
Globally, women have low rates of participation in sport and the
supportive environment of quidditch helps unlock sporting potential.
Quidditch encourages people who are usually not into sport through
female only events and a range of tournaments to suit all levels.
Protective
The IQA has an internationally enforced sexual harassment policy to
protect victims of sexual assult. All national governing bodies for
quidditch must have designated individuals to swiftly deal with
complaints.
Empowering
Females are in a number of leadership positions as coaches, captains,
referees and on the international board of directors. Having such a
large female pressense creates inspiring role models for women getting
started in sport.
