Maultaschen is a traditional German dish that originated in the region of
Swabia. It consists of an outer-layer of past dough which encloses a
filling traditionally consisting of minced meat, smoked meat, spinach,
bread crumbs and onions and flavored with various herbs and spices.
Fun fact about these beautiful Swabian raviolies: they have been created by
monks, in order to eat them on Good Friday. Since they were not allowed to
eat meat, they thought they would cheat God by hiding it inside the
pasta.
