Disco Ball

With a name that was derived from the French discotheque nightclubs, disco music was the preeminent form of dance music during the 1970s. Disco is best known for it's electric piano synths, roving rhythm guitars and string sections that meet up to form a four-on-the-floor beat and syncopated basslines. The genre started it's exponential cultural rise in the underground, deejay-based clubs that catered to gay, black and latinx dancers in major North American urban centres, and as such has been heavily linked to LGBTQ+ culture and the cultures of many people of colour since it's inception. Well-known disco artists from disco's original hayday include Earth, Wind & Fire, Boney M., and Donna Summer. As well, artists such as ABBA, CHIC, and Michael Jackson would go on to aid the genre in becoming an iconic notion of the 1970s and 1980s- all of which is perfectly captured in the film SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER starring John Trovolta. Today, disco has made a resurgence after steadily declining in popularity throughout the 1980s and 1990s, due to the popularity of grunge rock at the time. Musicians such as Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, and Purple Disco Machine have helped revive the genre with a modern twist. As a result, a new sub-type of the genre has emerged (in addition to ones like Cosmic Disco and hi-NRG that existed before it,) called nu-disco.
