Voyager 1 is currently more than 24 billion kilometers from Earth, drifting through interstellar space. A radio signal sent from the spacecraft today still takes over 22 hours to reach us, even traveling at the speed of light.
It carries the Golden Record — sounds and images of Earth — in case it is ever found.
Every second it survives out there is a small miracle of 1970s engineering.
Eyes on Another World
On Mars, rovers like Perseverance are collecting rock samples the size of a piece of chalk, sealed and cached for a future mission to bring home. NASA's Ingenuity helicopter proved that powered flight is possible on a planet with an atmosphere less than 1% as dense as Earth's.
Meanwhile, the James Webb Space Telescope sits 1.5 million kilometers away, watching light that left its source before our own galaxy had finished forming.
