Kundum
A Festival Dance from Nzima Land in Western Ghana
The Kundum dance is a traditional Ghanaian dance performed by the Ahanta
and Nzema people during their annual Kundum festival. It originated from
a legend about a hunter who observed dwarves dancing in a circle because
they had food. The hunter returned home and introduced the dance to his
community. The dance combines vibrant rhythmic movements, traditional
drumming, and agricultural gestures such as plucking fruits and clearing
paths. Kundum is celebrated each September to thank the creator of the
universe for the abundance of food during the harvest season in the
area.
