Miniature

Miniature doxies weigh less than 11 pounds.

Fun Fact: Mini dachshunds were originally bred to hunt small-burrowing game such as rabbits.

Tweenie (the "ish")

Tweenie doxies weigh between 11-15 pounds.

Fun Fact: "Tweenie" is not an actual size category but is an unofficial class used to describe doxies that are larger than a mini but smaller than a standard.

Standard

Standard doxies weigh between 16-32 pounds.

Fun Fact: Standard dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers. Yikes!

Dachshunds Require Special Care

Because dachshunds have such a long body they are prone to back problems. Special care is required to help prevent such ailments.

Use a ramp. Ramps up to furniture can eliminate hard impacts caused by jumping on and off furniture.
Don't let your dachshund use the stairs. Preventing doxies from using the stairs can help reduce impacts and prevent unnatural back posture.
Hold your dachshund properly. Make sure to support their rump and body. Never pick up a dachshund by their upper body.
Don't let your dachshund get overweight. You may need to portion and schedule your dachshund's meals. Too much weight can put unnecessary stress on a doxie's back.
