Writing probably developed slowly out of initially rudimentary signs and symbols. In ancient Mesopotamia, or present-day Iraq, a simple pronto-writing system that used tokens to represent livestock and other trade goods originated around 8000BCE. Gradually, this system of tokens became more complex until it developed into a writing system. In Mesopotamia, writing was recorded on clay tablets that lasted a long time, allowing archeologists to read ancient Mesopotamian writing thousands of years later.
