Pixel Art

Pixel Art Collage

If you grew up in the 90s like me (hey, 90s babies!), pixel art games were our childhood. Whenever I look at pixel art or revisit any of my favorite games, I get transported back to my parents house, playing Mario Brothers with my siblings. Pixel art just can’t help but evoke a feeling of nostalgia—whether you grew up in the '90s or not!

Pixel art was limited by the resolution and color palettes imposed by early computer software; this ensured designers were purposeful in placing their pixels. Over time, computer software has evolved, which means gaming graphics have grown alongside it. As graphics have improved—and the workload of designing them has increased—companies are investing more into the visuals than the stories. With gaming graphics peaking and companies prioritizing look over substance, I believe there will be a resurgence in people looking for pixelated games as a deliberate style choice to separate from the masses.

Pixel art is deliberately lo-fi in a high-definition world.
