Watercolour (UK), also called watercolor (US) or aquarelle (French); from Italian diminutive of Latin aqua 'water'. It is
a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolours were first
created in China, appearing shortly after paper was invented. Watercolours soon became popular in Japan as well. Pigment
is mixed first with a binder, which most of the time is gum arabic, then water is added, and then, using a brush, the
pigment is added to the surface like paper. When the water dries, the pigment is left on the surface by the binder.
Watercolour refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork.
