Chess is a two-player board game played on an 8×8 board with 64 squares. Each player controls sixteen pieces, including a king, queen, rooks, bishops, knights, and pawns, each moving in specific ways. The aim of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, while some games may also end in a draw. Modern chess rules were developed in Europe by the late 15th century and became standardized in the 19th century. Chess is now played worldwide. Organized chess began in the 19th century and is overseen by FIDE. Wilhelm Steinitz became the first World Chess Champion in 1886, and Gukesh Dommaraju holds the title as of 2024. Chess has influenced culture, art, and science, especially computer science, highlighted by Deep Blue’s historic victory over Garry Kasparov in 1997. Despite powerful modern chess engines, the game remains unsolved.
