The Lalibela churches are 11 monolithic, rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia, carved downwards from a single rock in the 12th century under King Gebre Meskel Lalibela. They were built to create a "New Jerusalem" as a pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Christians. The most famous is St. George's Church, while the largest is Biete Medhani Alem.
The churches were not constructed in a traditional way but rather were hewn from the living rock of monolithic blocks. These blocks were further chiselled out, forming doors, windows, columns, various floors, roofs etc.
