Tennis originated from the 12th-century French handball game, Jeu de Paume ("game of the palm"), which was initially played by monks. The modern version, lawn tennis, was patented in 1874 by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield in Great Britain, though its rules evolved to be different from the original game. The sport's name is believed to come from the French word "tenez" which means "take heed" or "receive" and was called out by the server before a point.
