Foraging for Funghi

My favourite family hobby 🍄

It's autumn and our favourite time of year for rising at the crack of dawn, donning our already muddy walking boots, and with straw basket in hand, heading out to the woods around Vetralla in Lazio. The gems we search for are the illustrious Porcini mushrooms, often referred to as Penny Buns in the UK, as well as the delightful Ovuli, or Caesar's mushrooms, the delicious little eggs hidden on the forest floor. The squeals of delight from my children when they correctly find and identify a mushroom, is almost as satisfying as the end, deliciously prepared, result. Of course, any foraging needs to be done with an expert guide for proper identification and once everything has been triple-checked, it's homeward bound to cook up a storm together, for a well-earned lunch!
