Italian, a Romance language, is the official language of Italy and is spoken by approximately 68 to 85 million people. It evolved from the colloquial Latin of the Roman Empire and is considered one of the languages most closely related to Latin, alongside Sardinian. Italian is also spoken in San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia.
