Hi, I'm Connie Vatsha, originally from Baleni, Bizana in the Eastern Cape. Growing up in a rural village surrounded by nature gave me a deep respect for the land and everything it provides. A few years ago, I joined the Eco-Champs programme, sponsored by SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute) — and it changed my life.
Through Eco-Champs, I developed a passion for environmental conservation, community empowerment, and traditional knowledge. One of our main roles was to educate our community about medicinal plants — how they are used, how to protect them, and why they matter. These plants are not just part of our heritage — they are essential for our health and our identity. We also took part in activities like: Teaching local youth about biodiversity Hosting community clean-ups Promoting sustainable practices like planting indigenous trees It made me realize how much knowledge exists in rural communities — and how important it is to protect and share that knowledge before it's lost.
