Music has always been an integral part of who I am.
Writing and playing music with my brother over the years has given me
tools I’ll carry with me for life—tools like patience, attention to
detail, and grounding. I’ve learned patience by allowing a song to tell
its story before shutting it off, much like how life requires us to let
a season fully unfold before giving up. Sometimes a song needs time to
build momentum, and as the listener, I get to choose: will I sit with
it, or skip ahead in search of the next catchy tune? I’ve developed
attention to detail through songwriting and music theory. Studying the
structure of songs—why some thrive in chaos while others require strict
order—has deepened my curiosity and admiration for the brilliance of
certain artists and producers. And most importantly, I’ve found
grounding through simply sitting with the beauty of music. Life has
thrown me plenty of roadblocks, and time and time again, one of the
simplest and most effective ways for me to slow down is by playing a
song that reflects how I feel, affirms my emotions through melody, or
eases my anxiety with bold, poetic lyricism. Music, to me, is more than
playing piano, singing, or discussing theory.
Music is like a friend.
