Strawberry shortcake has roots that go back several centuries. The idea of combining fruit with a crumbly, biscuit-like cake started in Europe, particularly in England, where shortcakes (or "short" breads made with fat like butter or lard) were already popular. The dessert as we know it became especially popular in the United States in the 19th century. Early versions were made with pie crusts or biscuits and served with mashed or sliced strawberries and cream. Over time, the recipe evolved into the soft, slightly sweet cakes we enjoy today. It's now a beloved summer dessert, especially during strawberry season.
