Rock and roll is a genre of popular music that evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It originated from African American music such as jazz, rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, electric blues, gospel, and jump blues, as well as country music.

bands that put CBGB's in New York City on the map.
Punk rock is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in
1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the
corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced
short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with
stripped-down instrumentation.
