5 tips for taking better photos
-
Focus on Eyes
If you remember nothing else in portrait photography but the mantra 'focus on the eye' you will at least be taking photos with crisp sharp eyes. There is nothing worse then going to edit your photos only to realise you missed focusing on the eyes and are left with an out of focus image.
-
Move in close
When it comes to portrait photography the closer you can be to your subject the better. Being able to move in close to your subject means you can better highlight details and features that may be lost if taken from a distance.
-
Consider your image composition
Finding a strong focal point for your photo will help tell the story to the viewer. When you’re setting up a shot, you should stop and ask yourself:
“What do I want viewers to focus on?”
By ensuring you have a key focal point you will provide interest within your photos and capture the attention of your viewer. -
Watch the light
Understanding how light works and how to best showcase it in your photos is a critical skill to learn. You can use light in a variety of interesting ways that can totally change the mood of your photos.
-
Direct your subject
Not everyone is comfortable when it comes to having their focus taken. For a lot of people it can feel very unnatural which means it's your job to help your subject feel comfortable. You will need to play the role of director - providing prompts to your subject on how to best position their bodies, which way to turn, where to focus etc, in order to get the best out of them. You can find a number of great websites that will talk on this topic further.
