Making Kefir

My 'every day' hobby

Bottles of kefir & kefir grains

Kefir is a fermented milk drink similar to a thin yogurt that is made from kefir grains. It is prepared by inoculating the milk of cows, goats, or sheep with kefir grains. Kefir is a common breakfast, lunch or dinner drink consumed in countries of western Eurasia. Kefir is consumed at any time of the day, such as alongside European pastries, as well as being an ingredient in cold soups.

The pictures below show the steps in making kefir.

Step 1: Place kefir grains in a clean jar with some milk.

Step 2: Add a non-airtight cover and leave in a warm place for 24 hours.

Step 3: When small globes of whey form, strain liquid into a bowl. Reserve grains to start next batch.

Step 4: Enjoy your delicious kefir as a drink or pour it over your breakfast cereal!
