Makeup is the practice of decorating the skin and other visible parts of
the body to highlight them or improve their appearance, using cosmetic
products.
By extension, the term also designates the cosmetics that
are used, such as lipsticks, eye shadows, face powder, bronzer,
highlighter or diamond, makeup base, etc. with the support of different
instruments such as brushes and sponges.
In performing arts it is
used to characterize actors as the character they will represent,
whether exaggerating a feature, deforming the face or simply starting
from something new, as well as to correct distortions produced by
lighting.
In addition to minimizing the loss of color, makeup helps
create the character and also contributes to its external
characterization, appropriate to the physical appearance and the demands
of the script. The makeup used by clowns is an extreme example of
characterization, which is also used at parties, such as Carnival.
There
are other types of makeup such as social makeup, bridal, photographic,
editorial, special effects and self-makeup.
The person who does
makeup is called a makeup artist or makeup artist and requires prior
studies such as color theory, image design and application techniques.
