Pigeon Love

Rock Pigeons (also called Rock Doves - yes, they belong to the same family as doves: Columbidae) are often thought of as "rats of the sky." However, they are incredibly intelligent and beautiful birds and have been cohabitating right alongside humans for over 5,000 years.

Fun Facts:

Pigeons can find their way home, even if released from a distant location blindfolded. They can navigate by sensing the earth’s magnetic fields, and perhaps also by using sound and smell. They can also use cues based on the position of the sun.
Rock Pigeons carried messages for the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I and II, saving lives and providing vital strategic information.
Rock Pigeons get their name from their preferred nesting site: on the side of a cliff. They find a flat rock space and use just a few twigs to keep their eggs from rolling off. This is one reason they adapted so well to living in cities (think sky scrapers and parking garages). Because of this, the internet enjoys posting pictures of pigeons making really bad nests in really weird places. 😂
