Pencil drawing, drawing executed with an instrument composed of graphite
enclosed in a wood casing and intended either as a sketch for a more
elaborate work in another medium, an exercise in visual expression, or a
finished work. Pencil drawing is monochromatic. It has a single hue
(gray), but with different brightness values (from very light gray, to
very dark gray). To get realistic results when drawing with pencils, start
by drawing the form accurately. Then, brightness values are the key.
Meaning, how dark or light each area is.
The most realistic pencil drawings, or hyperrealistic pencil
drawings, can sometimes be hard to believe. But a skillful use of shading
and the representation of extremely fine details in pencil really can look
like a photograph. Hyperrealistic pencil drawings are often realised in
black and white.
