Carnival, has been rooted in the History and woven into fabric of
Caribean society for over 200 years. As a form of rebellion against
their masters; African Slaves, used Carnival as a means to mock their
former masters and solidify their freedom upon being emancipated. During
a celebration called Jovert, the slaves would dawn filty clothes, mud ,
oil and paint to represent the hardships they experienced during the
middle passage and their enslavement. This takes place on Carival
Monday; however, by Carival Tuesday, there is a rebirth in the form of
beautiful costumes, adorned with gems, colourful feathers and gliter!
This is to express the boldness, resilience and freedom of a people who
were once held in chains!
