Hyacinths

The symbolism of hyacinths dates back to Greek mythology. Apollo, the god of the sun, and Zephyrus, god of the west winds, were both fighting for the divine hero Hyakinthos. Overcome with jealousy, Zephyrus accidentally struck Hyakinthos and killed him. It is said that a flower bloomed from his spilled blood, which Apollo named after him. Purple hyacinths, therefore, symbolise regret and sorrow.
