Hydrangea Flowers: Symbolism and Planting

Hydrangeas are a botanical plant most recognised for their large, billowy flowers and sprawling green foliage. Their flat shaped petals resemble the delicate wings of a butterfly clustered together.

There are over 100 varieties of Hydrangea plants with colours ranging from ivory, blue, purple and pink. Depending on the colour, Hydrangea flowers can symbolise romance, abundance, gratitude and in some cultures they can represent heartfelt emotions and apologies.

Hydrangeas grow in Spring and are at their peak bloom during Summer. They thrive in rich soil with good drainage and do well in semi-shaded areas with morning sun exposure. They are a deciduous plant, meaning they shed their leaves annually. A curiousity for the varieties of Hydrangea plants could be endless, but here are three most common-known types of Hydrangeas:
