I ❤️ Manchester!
And the wonderful people who live here
Manchester is a bustling, rapidly expanding city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester located in Northwest England. With a population of over 2.8 million people, it is one of the UK’s most populus cities, second only to London. Manchester boasts many exciting attractions including two Premier Leage football clubs, world-class museums, libraries and art galleries, ancient Roman ruins, beautiful parks and gardens, scenic lakes, rivers and canals, along with a thriving bar and restaurant scene; it even has a Michelin-starred restaurant!
The history of this glorious city begins with a civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort Mancunium, established around the year AD 79 on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the Medlock and Irwell rivers. Throughout the Middle Ages, Manchester remained a manorial township but began to grow at an astonishing rate near the start of the 19th century. Manchester's unplanned urbanisation was brought on by a boom in textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution and resulted in it becoming the world's first industrialised city in 1853. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating the Port of Manchester which linked the city to the Irish Sea, 58 km to the west. The city's fortune declined after WWII owing to deindustrialisation, but a devastating IRA bombing, which targeted Manchester’s City Centre in 1996, led to extensive investment and regeneration. Following considerable redevelopment, Manchester was selected as host city for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, followed by many top British broadcasting services relocating their London-based head offices and studios to Manchester’s “MediaCityUK” in 2011.
