The original chocolate chip cookie recipe was created in the 1930s by
chef Ruth Wakefield, who ran the Toll House restaurant in Whitman,
Massachusetts. Her "Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie" was first
featured in her 1938 cookbook, Tried and True, as a dessert to accompany
ice cream. The recipe quickly gained popularity across America, even
making an appearance on Betty Crocker's popular radio program. In 1939,
Wakefield sold the rights to her recipe and the Toll House name to
Nestlé.
