Oud

The Arabic oud is a traditional stringed instrument that holds a prominent place in Middle Eastern music, often regarded as the ancestor of the European lute. Characterized by its deep, pear-shaped body, short neck, and lack of frets, the oud produces a rich, warm, and resonant tone. Typically, it has 11 or 13 strings grouped in pairs, played with a plectrum, allowing for a wide range of emotional expression. The oud has roots stretching back over 5,000 years, believed to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia. Over centuries, it has evolved in design and craftsmanship, influencing musical traditions across the Arab world, Persia, and the Mediterranean.
