Veganism is becoming increasingly common as more people discover that they can help prevent the suffering and death of animals simply by replacing animal foods and other animal products with alternatives. In addition, the spread of veganism contributes to a reduction in speciesism, the discrimination against animals on the basis of their species membership. It is only a question of making the connection: would we really consider it acceptable if we were in the shoes of non-human animals? If we knew that we could be born pigs or chickens, surely we would not accept a world in which animals were confined and killed to be eaten. Is it really fair to protect some animals, such as dogs and cats, and disregard others who suffer like them in the same situation? Most people are against the mistreatment of dogs. So is it fair to accept what happens to other animals on farms and in slaughterhouses?
