karate, unarmed martial-arts discipline employing kicking, striking, and defensive blocking with arms and legs. Emphasis is on concentrating as much of the body’s power as possible at the point and instant of impact. Striking surfaces include the hands (particularly the knuckles and the outer edge), ball of the foot, heel, forearm, knee, and elbow. All are toughened by practice blows against padded surfaces or wood. Pine boards up to several inches in thickness can be broken by the bare hand or foot of an expert. Timing, tactics, and spirit, however, are each considered at least as important as physical toughening.

Some Karate Techniques

Mawashi Geri (Roundhouse kick)

The roundhouse kick begins by chambering the kicking leg high, followed by turning the hip and snapping the leg outward from the knee. When throwing this kick to the torso or lower body, the practitioner can strike using the top of the foot. This can help add more distance to the kick; however, when striking the head, it is often advised that the strike comes from the lower shin, as this area of the leg is much stronger. Aiming to hit your opponent with the shin rather than the top of the foot can prevent injury caused by impacting the foot, along with its numerous small bones, and the hard bone of the skull.

Ushiro Geri (back kick)

Ushiro Geri is a powerful kick because the back kick is thrown like a mule kick. However, a back kick can be a less accurate kick because it is aimed at a target behind the kicker.

Age Zuki (uppercut punch)

When executing an uppercut punch from the guard, the shoulder lowers with the knees and then the body is propelled forward and upwards, extending the fist towards the chin and face area.

Haito Uchi (ridge hand strike).
