Outer Space Power Politics

The ''Race for Space'' and a Changing Global Order?

Outer Space has formally been regarded as global commons, ever since the Outer Space Treaty came into force. Exploration of and access to Outer Space is open to all nations and peoples, while the states are banned from declaring sovereignty in any part of it. Due to the rising need for resources and development of new technologies that enable resource mining in unhabitable spaces, Outer Space resource mining has been made possible. While the exploration of the universe might seem a step forward in our understanding of its functioning, there are high chances that celestial bodies amongst them the Moon and asteroids might get exploited for their resources.

The formation of the Artemis Program shows that states have a desire to research the universe and generate revenue from their activities. The growing political, strategic and commercial value of Outer Space might also push states to start a ''Race for Space'', changing the existing (legal) order in the process.
