House Targaryen is one of the noble houses and families that exist within the medieval fantasy land of Westeros. Westeros is the setting of the story told within the series of epic fantasy novels A song of Ice and Fire and the later adapatations to screen A Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

House Targaryen is one of the great houses that have shaped and ruled over Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms. They are a noble family of Valyrian descent and are known for their distinctive physical features, namely: their silver or blonde hair, pale skin and light purple or blue eyes. The Targaryens are the only family of dragonlords who survived the doom of Old Valyria. Their house words are Fire and Blood which comes from the fact that they are of the blood of old Valyria and seized the throne through the power of their dragons. The Targaryen sigil(coat of arms) is a red three-headed dragon, breathing red flames on black. The three-headed dragon represents Aegon the conqueror and his two sisters Rhaenys and Visenya. Aegon Targaryen sought to unite the seven kingdoms of westeros under one rule. He did so with the help of his sisters and the power of their dragons where all three were dragonriders. Aegon's conquest ended with him being anointed King. The house sigil embodies the essence of each noble family and is representative of their history, their values and their role in society. The story of House Targaryen chronicles the rise and the fall of their house in their pursuit cyclical to take the throne, lose the throne and then re-take it. It is a reflection on the nature of power and the impact that it has on those who wield it.
