Pilates uses a combination of approximately 50 simple, repetitive exercises to create muscular exertion. Advocates of this system of exercise claim that exercises can be used as strength training for rehabilitation or a strenuous workout vigorous enough to challenge skilled athletes.
There are two primary types of Pilates, each offering different approaches to training:
Mat Pilates: This type focuses on exercises performed on the floor using a mat. It relies on your body weight for resistance, along with small props like resistance bands, Pilates rings, or balls. Mat Pilates emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and stability, working the entire body with minimal equipment.
Reformer Pilates: Reformer Pilates uses a specialized piece of equipment called a Pilates reformer. This machine features a sliding carriage, springs, and pulleys to provide varying levels of resistance. Reformer Pilates offers more dynamic movements and can be more challenging than mat work, allowing for greater resistance training and flexibility improvements.
