Persepolis
π±π πΌπΏ
Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid
Empire and is situated in Iran. It is one of the key Iranian cultural
heritage sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The city,
which acted as a major center for the empire, was taken by the army of
Alexander the Great in 330 BC. Soon after, its wooden parts were
deliberately destroyed by fire.
The exact function of Persepolis remains unclear. It may be better to
think of Persepolis as only one complex rather than a city in
the usual sense.
