Mangoes are the edible fruits of the evergreen
mangifera indica tree, which can grow as tall as 100ft, and they come in
different shapes, tastes, and colors of the rainbow: red, orange,
yellow, greenโฆeven purple!
Mangoes grow in tropical climates and originated in south Asia before
colonization spread them to other parts of the world. Even now,
India is the largest producer of mangoes, responsible for over 50% of global production. Here in Nigeria,
Mangoes are grown in all 36 states. My childhood home had a mango tree
in the compound and we have a massive mango tree in our current garden
too; there are mango trees all over the campus really and you won't
believe how beautiful it gets in April when the fruits are in season.

When Mango trees are first planted they can take up to 8 years to
produce fruit but when they are planted in pots they fruit as soon as 3
years after planting. Some trees fruit twice a year, instead of just
once and they can live up to 300 years.
There are over 500 different kinds of mangoes, and some mangoes are developed to be
seedless
for convenience.
Mangoes are
rich in vitamn C, vitamin A, antioxidants, potassium and
fiber, PLUS, they're low in calories despite their sweetness. Mango leaves
help with skin rejuvenation and hair growth, and the high fiber seeds
are versatile when ground to a powder. The fruit's components are well
used in herbal/traditional medicine.
